MODEST MOUSE PLAYING CARD ILLUSTRATIONS & DESIGN

MELTING BEARS AND AN EGG THAT BECOMES A CAGE THAT BECOMES AN EGG

Right as the pandemic shut down the city of Portland I found myself driving to Isaac Brock’s house to hang out and brainstorm ideas for a deck of playing cards for Modest Mouse. Months later, the city came back to life, the world did too - kinda. This is what I have to show for my time in semi-quarantine, a deck of 52 cards, custom illustrated, with zero connection to reality.

THE CONCEPT

My first try at illustrating a deck of cards sort of like a flip book animation. The idea being that from the Ace card to the King and image would evolve little by little, maybe to resolve itself, or maybe not. Like a little short story within each suite so that there’s an extra level of interest for the viewer/player. In one suit an egg cracks and a creature is born, their body morphs into some odd bubbly matter that becomes a cage which eventually morphs back into an egg. Or something like that. You can still buy these at Modest Mouse shows and on Merchbar.
